BUILT GREEN® Canada is a national, third-party certification program for residential construction. It looks past insulation thickness and window ratings to assess how a home performs as a whole system: the envelope, the materials, the air you breathe, the water you use, and the waste left behind when the build is done.
For you, that means a home that holds its temperature through an Alberta winter, continuously exchanges stale air for fresh, uses less energy than the reference house it’s modelled against, and carries documented proof of all of it. We build toward Built Green Gold across our single-family homes, and each one is certified on its own merits.

How It Works
Every Genesis Single-Family Home Earns Its Certification the Same Way
Certification isn’t granted at the end of a build. It’s designed in from the start and verified by someone who doesn’t work for us.

01.
It Starts on the Drawing Board
Before construction begins, your home is scored against the Built Green checklist across eight categories. The target level determines the standards the build has to meet, so efficiency is engineered in rather than added on.

An Independent Energy Advisor Models Your Home
A Natural Resources Canada licensed Energy Advisor builds a computer simulation of your specific home and calculates its energy use against a reference house. Built Green Gold requires a rating 20% lower than that reference house, along with 120 total checklist points and a minimum score in each of the eight categories.

03.
We Test the House, Not the Plan
Once built, your home undergoes a mandatory blower door test that pressurizes the house and measures real air leakage. Only after the home passes does certification get issued. No test, no certificate.

What is Built Green certification?
Built Green Canada is a national third-party program that certifies residential construction against measurable standards for energy, materials, air quality, ventilation, waste, water, wellness, and builder practices. Certification is issued per home, not per builder. Genesis participates in Built Green Canada’s Single Family program; row homes are not currently enrolled.
What are the certification levels?
There are five: Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, and Net Zero Energy+. Each level requires both a higher energy performance score and more total checklist points, for example Gold calls for a rating 20% lower than the reference house and 120 total points.
What is a blower door test?
It’s a mandatory air-leakage test. A calibrated fan pressurizes your home and measures how much air escapes. It’s the difference between a home designed to be efficient and a home proven to be.
Who verifies the results?
An Energy Advisor licensed by Natural Resources Canada, independent of the builder. They model the home, run the test, and report the EnerGuide rating.
Does certification actually lower my bills?
A better envelope, efficient mechanical systems, and verified ventilation all reduce the energy needed to keep your home comfortable. The performance is measured against a reference house, so the improvement is quantified rather than estimated.
Is every Genesis home certified at the same level?
Certification is earned home by home based on its own modelling and testing. Built Green Gold is the standard we build toward across our single-family homes, and each home’s rating reflects its own verified results. As of 2026, 97% of Genesis single-family homes enrolled in the program achieved Built Green Gold certification. A home’s final level depends on factors including roofline, elevation, exposure, window size and placement, and room count, so Gold is not guaranteed on every home.
Does anyone check the checklist itself?
Yes. Built Green Canada visually verifies a portion of every checklist, and a further selection of homes is randomly audited in full. Builders keep supporting documentation on file for every point claimed.
